Desktop Managed Services - Frequently Asked Questions

ATS

Why would I pay a monthly price for a service when I can buy a set of tools for a onetime price?

A onetime price is deceptive. True Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) must factor in issues such as integration, administration and support costs. IBM Express Desktop Management Services is designed to provide returns well beyond the initial cost in terms of efficiency, productivity, uptime, security and availability of IT resources that can focus on more strategic areas of the business.

How are these services different from solutions provided by Microsoft for OS updates or Symantec for virus definitions?

The most critical time for patch vulnerability is in the first two weeks after an update is announced by the vendor. In many cases, we can provide/push patches well before they are released to the public or more quickly than a typical internal IT staff could deploy them on its own. IBM will typically have an update pushed to desktops in 24–48 hours.

Is it safe to send my system information, especially data backups, over the Internet?

IBM uses Triple Data Encryption Standard (DES) to encrypt agent instructions. All agent and control traffic is sent over Secure Sockets Layer (SSL). The backup service uses fully encrypted 128-bit Advanced Encryption Standard (AES). This methodology makes it difficult for someone to intercept or access the information being transmitted.
