IBM Express Online Backup for Distributed Servers An easy, economical way to protect your valuable business data Frequently asked questions What are the system requirements for this service? Express Online Backup for distributed servers requires Microsoft® Windows® server 2003, Windows 2000, Windows XP or Windows Storage Server 2003. Servers must have an always-on Internet connection with a minimum connection speed of 56KB. The security-rich Web portal requires Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 or higher. What software will I need to install? To begin backing up your server, you normally need only to download the IBM Express Online backup agent to the server and register it with the service. The Web portal usually requires no additional software for your Web browser. How is the solution priced? You can purchase various online backup sizes, priced per 10GB pack and per server. The service starts with the option of backing up as little as 30GB a month — for under US$400, plus a US$150 onetime setup charge for each server backed up. What happens if I need to add capacity? You can increase your capacity at any time by server and 10GB pack. The upgrade will just be included in your next bill. Can I recover my files back to an earlier date or only to the most recent version? The system is designed to allow you to recover any current and historical files that you have designated for recovery. Am I giving up control of my backup operations to IBM? Absolutely not. Even though the service automates the back-end functions that help ensure that your backups take place as you have determined — without user intervention — you retain complete control of your backup operations. You can use the service's Web portal to monitor processes, change settings or make other adjustments as your company’s business needs or your preferences require. Do I have to be connected directly to my servers to control backup and recovery operations? No. Through the management portal, you can initiate service and manage or monitor the entire backup and vaulting process, from virtually any Web browser at virtually any time. You can initiate recovery operations from virtually any Internet connection, as well. IBM Express Online Backup for distributed servers is designed to enable you to use the Web to select your backup schedule and check the status of your backup and recovery operations. You also can delegate responsibilities across your enterprise, which means that you control who has access to any particular database. Who has permission to access my data? That is entirely up to you. Users can be given various backup and/or recovery permissions via password control. All data in the backup vault is encrypted. What if I don't want my files restored online? We can provide restored data on a network attached storage device. Is this solution necessary for a business of my size? IBM Express Online Backup for distributed servers has been designed for companies with 100 to 1,000 employees. Various options are available for different sizes of companies. Can this solution back up constantly changing files and databases? Yes. You can even back up open, changing files such as e-mail servers, online databases and transaction processing systems — without third-party database plugins, open-file managers or complex configurations. What if I have limited bandwidth to dedicate to system backup? The IBM Express Online Backup for distributed servers solution can continuously back up your data using patented technology that is designed to transmit only the bytes that change in your files and databases. This highly efficient approach is designed to reduce both server load and bandwidth utilization. Alternatively, you can schedule backups to occur during non-peak hours or after databases are closed.
