You can continuously back up your data with virtually no ongoing maintenance or intervention from your organization. To learn more about how online backup works — and how little you have to do once the service is up and running — click on the links below: The backup and restore process Using IBM Express Online Backup for distributed servers is as simple as sending files over the Internet — except you don’t have to click "send." You purchase the backup size you need (you can easily increase your capacity easily over time). Configure the service to create backups all day or during a nightly window. Then the system takes over. After setup, there is essentially no ongoing intervention or management necessary on your part. The service automatically transmits backup files — even backups of open files and changing databases — to an offsite vault where files are encrypted. During transfer, resilient connections help protect against data loss in the event of Internet disruptions. And throughout the process, IBM offers professional monitoring and proactive problem resolution. In the event of a data emergency, recovery of current and historic files can be performed over the Internet from virtually anywhere using a standard Web browser. You can select the data you want to recover from a catalog of your archived file versions. Depending on how often you have configured your files to be backed up, you can restore up to just before your data loss. For larger restores such as the loss of an entire server or an even larger-scale disaster, IBM can return properly designated data to your site or to a designated alternate site via a network attached storage (NAS) device. Using the portal Automated backup doesn't mean that you give up control of your security processes. On the contrary, you have control through the service’s Web management portal. Its interface makes the process as easy as using a Web browser. You can initiate the service, manage user settings and backup schedules, monitor the entire backup and vaulting process, and initiate recovery operations from any Web browser at virtually any time. You also can delegate responsibilities to others within your organization - so you control who has access to your backup. Underlying technology IBM Express Online Backup for distributed servers offers security technology to help protect your data during transmission — including Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) encryption, browser-based Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) encryption and digital certificates. IBM's patented technology is designed to transmit only the bytes that change in your files and databases, reducing both server load and bandwidth utilization. This approach also enables you to back up data from files that change frequently such as those in use by e-mail servers, online databases and transaction processing systems — often without the need for third-party database plug-ins, open-file managers or complex configurations. When your data is sent to the service, it resides in a connection-resilient backup network with redundant service architecture that contains physical protection features, such as uninterrupted power supply (UPS), emergency backup generators and fire protection systems. The result? A vault with physical protection features for your critical business data.
